Round 4: Fubon Braves lose against Formosa

After 4 rounds played we can already see who rules in the ASEAN League and who belongs to weaker ones. There was no lack of excitement in the last round games. The round ended with change at the leadership position, derby games, favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

Round 4 most important game was a defeat of league's leader Taiwanese Fubon Braves (4-3). They were defeated by sixth ranked Formosa D. (2-4) 88-80 on Saturday night. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Fubon Braves. Formosa D. looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American guard Jerran Young (198-91, college: Wright St.) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 19 points, 16 rebounds, 8 assists and 6 steals and the other American import guard Anthony Tucker (193-89, college: MSU Moorhead) who added 25 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists during the contest. At the losing side Indian-Canadian center Sim Bhullar (226-92, college: N.Mexico St.) responded with 9 points and 19 rebounds. Formosa D. moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Macau and Zhuhai. Fubon Braves at the other side dropped to the second position with three games lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Mono Vampire. Fubon Braves will play next round against Singapore Slingers trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Formosa D. will try to continue on its current victory against eighth ranked Singapore Slingers at home.
The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Thailand Mono Vampire as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Mono Vampire smashed bottom-ranked Hong Kong Hong Kong ELL in Bangkok 98-75. Americans were the main players on the court. The winners were led by forward Michael Singletary (198-88, college: Texas Tech) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 24 points and 14 rebounds and Ryan Watkins supported him with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Even 26 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists by point guard Trey Kell (193-96, college: San Diego St., agency: Slash Sports) did not help to save the game for Hong Kong ELL. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings, which they share with Alab Pilipinas. Hong Kong ELL at the other side still closes the standings with three games lost. Hong Kong ELL will have a break next week, which should allow them to rest in order to get back on the winning path. Mono Vampire will try to continue on its current victory against ninth ranked Saigon Heat on the road.

Alab Pilipinas will meet at home Zhuhai (#7) in the next round where they are favorite. Mono Vampire will play against Saigon Heat (#9) and hope to secure a win.

(2-4) to fourth ranked Filipino Alab Pilipinas (4-1) 100-99 on Sunday evening. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Formosa D.. It was a very good performance for Samuel Deguara who helped to win the game recording 20 points and 9 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field). Alab Pilipinas have a solid four-game winning streak. Defending Filipino champion used an opportunity after Mono Vampire lost their game and moved up joining them at the top position. Formosa D. at the other side dropped to the fourth place with four games lost. Alab Pilipinas' next round opponent will be Zhuhai (#7) where they are favorite. Formosa D. will play against Singapore Slingers and hope to win that game.
Important game to mention about took place in Macau. Seventh ranked Zhuhai (2-4) saved a 3-point victory on the road edging one of their biggest challengers Macau (2-4) 94-91 in the fight for the fourth place. Worth to mention a great performance of Julian Boyd who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 26 points and 17 rebounds. Zhuhai moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Formosa D. and Macau. Zhuhai will face higher ranked Alab Pilipinas (#3) in Manila in the next round and it may be the game of the week.

In the last game of round 4 Zhuhai lost to Singapore S. on the opponent's court 72-76.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 23 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists by Xavier Alexander of Singapore S..



Alab Pilipinas - Mono Vampire 96-73

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of Thailand Mono Vampire (4-1) in Manila on Tuesday night. Visitors were rolled over by Filipino Alab Pilipinas (4-1) 96-73. Important game to mention about took place in Macau. Zhuhai moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Formosa D. and Macau. Zhuhai will face higher ranked Alab Pilipinas (#3) in Manila in the next round and it may be the game of the week.

(2-4) to fourth ranked Filipino Alab Pilipinas (4-1) 100-99 on Sunday evening. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Formosa D.. Alab Pilipinas players were unselfish on offense dishing 26 assists. It was a very good performance for Maltese center Samuel Deguara (225-91) who helped to win the game recording 20 points and 9 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field). American forward Nick King (201-95, college: MTSU) contributed with 19 points and 5 assists for the winners. American guard Anthony Tucker (193-89, college: MSU Moorhead) replied with a triple-double by scoring 22 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists and his fellow American import forward Jordan Tolbert (201-92, college: SMU) added 25 points and 9 rebounds in the effort for Formosa D.Five Alab Pilipinas and four Formosa D. players scored in double figures. There was a minor upset when 7th ranked Chinese Zhuhai (2-4) was defeated on the road by ninth ranked Singapore Singapore Slingers (1-1) 76-72 on Sunday. Americans were the main players on the court also this time. Worth to mention a great performance of guard Xavier Alexander (198-88, college: S.Nazarene) who helped to win the game recording a triple-double by scoring 23 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists and center Anthony McClain (211-88, college: Cincinnati) who added 19 points and 15 rebounds during the contest. Four Singapore Slingers players scored in double figures. At the losing side power forward Steven Thomas (204-81, college: MTSU) responded with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 20 rebounds and guard Douglas Herring Jr. (191-87, college: Utica) scored 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Zhuhai's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Singapore Slingers left bottom position moving up to eighth place. Loser Zhuhai dropped to the fourth position with four games lost. Singapore Slingers will face higher ranked Formosa D. (#4) in Changhua City in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Zhuhai will play on the road against Alab Pilipinas in Manila and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
